We're tackling fly tipping hotspots in your neighbourhoods

We want you to love where you live and know fly tipping is an issue in a number of specific neighbourhoods, which is why we are leading on our own initiatives and also working with Oldham Council to take action.

This autumn we launched three schemes to help reduce the amount of rubbish dumped in public spaces in Coldhurst - Clarkwell; Eldon Street and town centre neighbourhoods; and Derker and Holts.

• Putting the spotlight on fly tipping and encouraging customers to report any waste that has been dumped, we are turning fly tipping into environmental crime scenes in the Coldhurst - Clarkwell area.
• The design of bin stores in the Eldon Street and town centre neighbourhoods are being reviewed and we’re increasing recycling points to reduce litter.
• In Derker and Holts, we’ve hosted environmental days to help customers get rid of rubbish, spruce up their streets, help increase recycling rates and understand attitudes to disposing of waste.

The pilot schemes have been in operation since October and results so far are encouraging. We have found that penalties for dumping rubbish are effective deterrents to fly tippers, that customers welcome neighbourhood tidy up days, and customers in our town centre neighbourhoods support the redesign of bin stores so they better meet their needs.
 
At the end of the pilots we’ll assess their performance and if successful we will roll out action to other areas to help make fly tipping a thing of the past. Look out for more news in the new year.
