Community waste collection day to help tidy up Sholver

05/10/2022

Fridges, sofas, bed heads, old buggies and bags of household waste. These are just some of the things we helped people in Sholver to get rid of with three community waste collection days last month.

Held 27-28 September, the sessions were designed to support customers to get rid of their rubbish and help tidy up the neighbourhood. They are part of our new three-year strategy to tackle waste and fly tipping in our neighbourhoods.

Members of our team worked in partnership with our contractor partners CaseyHTF Commercial Repairs and H. Mullaney & Son skip hire to organise skips for locals to use to dispose of unwanted items and we did a litter pick of the local area too.

Oldham Council colleagues joined us to talk to locals about recycling, reporting pests and problems caused by putting the waste in the wrong wheelie bins – all of which impact on the neighbourhood.

Here are a few snaps from behind the scenes and headlines about what we achieved.

On a rolling programme between now and March 2025 we are targeting neighbourhoods where fly tipping and waste have been identified as being a particular cause for concern, and helping to clear them up.

Following this, we will be asking customers to do their bit to keep it looking good.

David Wrigley, our Head of Neighbourhood Care said: “Sessions like these in Sholver are an important part of our strategy to clear up neighbourhoods worst affected by dumped rubbish and show our support for Oldham Council’s Don’t Trash Oldham campaign.

“We wanted to give local people a helping a hand to get rid of the rubbish, which was positively received, and it was also a good opportunity to talk to customers and residents about their attitudes to waste that will help influence our work.

“We really want to make a positive difference in our areas and for our customers to feel proud of where they live. After we have cleared rubbish from an area, we are asking customers to help us by keeping it neat and tidy and I look forward to the difference we can make together.”
