Community waste collection programme comes to the Eldon Street neighbourhood
01/12/2022
Last week, our community waste collection programme came to the Eldon Street neighbourhood to give local people a hand to get rid of unwanted bulky household items – and just look what we achieved!
The day was organised in partnership with Oldham Council and our contractor partner, Holcombe Homes, which is delivering 18 new family homes for shared ownership and affordable rent at our £4.9m Hughes Close development in Failsworth.
Together we organised a free skip for residents to use; cleared TVs, furniture, bin bags and more from block landings; litter picked in the area; and talked to residents about recycling and ways to dispose of rubbish – all things that customers told us were important to them in our last perception survey.
David Wrigley, our Head of Neighbourhood Care said: “High volumes of fly tipping is a cause for concern in some parts of the estate and we’re committed to tackling this – no one wants to live in a place blighted by waste.
“Addressing the problem is in our Eldon Street neighbourhood plan and the recent clean-up day is among the ways we’re working to make a positive difference to local people. Now we’ve delivered this, we are asking customers to play their part and dispose of their waste carefully to keep the place neat and tidy.
“We’re also stepping up enforcement action against those who fly tip - issuing charges starting at £132 and ensuring the items are cleared – carrying out community litter picks and improving bin facilities for communal blocks.”
New waste management strategy
The Eldon Street community waste collection day is part of our new three-year waste management strategy to make FCHO-owned areas cleaner and greener places to live and support Oldham Council’s ongoing Don’t Trash Oldham campaign.
On a rolling programme between now and March 2025 we are targeting places where fly tipping and waste are issues and working to clear them up. Following this, we will be asking customers to do their bit to keep their area looking good.
