Customers on traditional pre-payment meters urged to claim their energy discount from the government

24/11/2022

We’re reminding customers on traditional pre-payment meters to make sure you claim your £400 energy discount from the government. You may have seen in the news recently that many people entitled to the credits have yet to use them and only about half of the discount vouchers have been redeemed across the country.

The government is giving every household £400 off their energy bill this winter to help with the cost of living.

The £400 will be paid in six instalments between October 2022 and March 2023.

If you have a traditional pre-payment meter, you’ll get the discount as either:

  • an automatic credit when you top up at your usual top-up point
  • a voucher

Your energy supplier will tell you how to get your discount.

If you get an automatic credit
If you get an automatic credit but you can’t afford to top up, get in touch with your energy supplier. They might be able to send you a voucher.

If you get a voucher
  • Your supplier will send the voucher to you by text message, email or post by the 14th day of each month.
  • You can only use your voucher for your own energy accounts. But you might be able to choose to use it for gas or electricity - even if you have different suppliers for these.
  • Your supplier will tell you where you can use your voucher. You’ll probably need to take it to a local Post Office or shop with a PayPoint logo.
  • You’ll need to show a UK driving licence or utility bill with the same name and address as your energy account.
