Homes for Ukraine

24/03/2022

Following the Government’s launch of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, we know some of our customers may have a spare room and will want to help.

We are committed to supporting the crisis in the Ukraine wherever we can so, if you want to do this, it’s important that you let us know first.

Our standard tenancy agreements says you have the right to take in lodgers as long as:

  • you get our agreement first.
  • it doesn’t lead to overcrowding,
  • you don’t grant a tenancy,
  • you take responsibility for the people who live with you

If you’re a shared owner or leaseholder, the situation will be different. Please contact us so we can look at your tenancy agreement or lease.

If you do register to become a sponsor there is a lot of detailed information on the Government website here.

Before applying here are some things to think about:

  • You will be paid £350 per month from the Government as a goodwill payment and will not be able to charge the person / family rent. We are unsure whether this payment will affect your benefits and are seeking further clarification.  Once we have this clarification, we will update this information.
  • Accommodation must be available for at least 6 months, be fit for people to live in, and suitable for the number of people to be accommodated.
  • You should consider what sort of support you are best able to provide and who you are most comfortable to support. Everyone who applies to this scheme will be subject to a range of checks, including those in the sponsoring household and those coming to the UK.
  • Eligibility checks may be carried out as part of the application process, which may include a visit to your home.
  • All those from Ukraine coming to the country under the scheme will be able to apply for benefits and to seek and take up employment.
  • The Government are asking for people to provide accommodation not food or meals, however, there is nothing stopping sponsors offering meals should they wish to.
  • You will not be expected to cover the costs of food and living expenses.
  • There are other organisations who will be able to offer support on things like access to benefits, registering with a GP, school placements etc. First Choice Homes Oldham will provide guidance with links to such organisations so you can help to sign post.
  • The Government will be asking local councils to provide wrap-around support and are currently reviewing how that will work.

We will continue to update this information when more detail is announced from the Government.
